German chocolate cake is a true labor of love. I don’t usually have an excuse to bake a big cake, so I was excited when my friend ordered one to bring to a coworker for her birthday. There are four different components to this four-layer German chocolate cake, so I spent a good portion of the day bopping in and out of the kitchen (amen to my current work from home lifestyle). The baking process includes baking two chocolate cakes, a rum syrup, the coconut pecan filling, and chocolate frosting. Phew. Most importantly, I learned that German chocolate cake isn’t actually German at all, but rather was named after the American who invited it. Does thinking that this cake was some type of German delicacy for my whole life count as a knowledge gap?
